Mick Fanning anuncia su retirada

En la que será su 17ª temporada en el World Championship Tour, Mick Fanning ha anuncidado su retirada después de los dos primeros eventos de la temporada.

La razón no es otra, así lo ha dicho el mismo, que la falta de motivación para competir cada día.

Este surfista australiano de 36 años pone así fin a una ilustre carrera, en la que ha ganado tres títulos mundiales (007, 2009 y 2013) y 22 eventos individuales, incluido el de Bells Beach, su primer título, conseguido con una invitación en 2001.

"Siento que he acabado de perder el impulso para competir día tras día", ha dicho Fanning. "Ha sido algo que he estado haciendo durante 17 años, e incluso antes de eso a través de QS y juniors, y siento que ya no puedo darle el 100%."

"Simplemente no lo estoy disfrutando tanto como en el pasado. Todavía amo surfear, y todavía estoy súper emocionado por ello, pero siento que hay otros caminos que tomar en esta etapa de mi vida."

"En cuanto a elegir retirarse en Bells, siempre he tenido en mente que mi último evento en el Tour iba a ser Bells. Eso es básicamente donde comencé mi carrera, fue mi primer triunfo CT, y me siento realmente conectado este lugar".

La vida de Fanning se ha visto marcada pro la pérdida de dos de sus hermanos (Sean murió en un accidente de coche en 1998 y Peter falleció mientras dormía en 2015), el ataque de tiburón en Jeffreys Bay, la separación de su mujer.

"Después de tantos años de gira, ha sido muy divertido", ha comentado Fanning. "Ha sido una montaña rusa con seguridad, tienes tus altibajos, pero ya sabes, cuando miro hacia atrás son recuerdos asombrosos: formarme para competir, las victorias, el celebrarlo con amigos y viendo lugares que nunca pensé que llegaría a disfrutar".

It’s time. I’ve decided the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach will be my last event as a full-time competitor on the World Surf League Championship Tour. The tour has given me so much but I need a fresh challenge. I still love the game but can’t find the motivation and dedication required to compete for World Titles anymore. My time on tour has been incredibly rewarding and I have so many amazing memories, all of which wouldn’t be possible without some very special people... My Mum, Dad, Sister and Brothers. I love you. My sponsors that have stood by me and continue to back my goals. My shaper Darren Handley and his entire team for the care and hard work they put into every single one of my boards. My fellow competitors on tour, you are like brothers and sisters to me. My very tight support crew that have been there in good and tough times, thank you for always being honest with me. And thanks to the fans and everyone that has encouraged me and cheered me on for all these years. I’m looking forward to life away from the tour while keeping a close eye on things. I’m so proud of our sport and the way it continues to evolve. The performance level on the Championship Tour and the Big Wave Tour is remarkable. I can’t wait to watch it all go down as one of the sport’s biggest fans. I’m also looking forward to evolving my own surfing in new ways, visiting unfamiliar places and taking on different experiences. I will be competing at the opening event at home on the Gold Coast and then wrapping things up at the Rip Curl Pro. Bells Beach is where my Championship Tour career really kicked off, I’ve always loved the place and it seems a fitting stop to finish things up.
