Como si del cuento de la cenicienta se tratara, Dusty Payne, un surfista que venía de la primera ronda, que no estaba entre los favoritos en ninguna apuesta, ha conseguido avanzar ronda tras ronda, y eliminar a los surfistas del WCT como Fanning, Buchan, o Smith, para alzarse con la victoria en el Reef Hawaiian Pro.
