Kelly Slater consigue su décimo campeonato de mundo

Kelly Slater ha hecho historia otra vez y se convierte en el nuevo campeón del mundo al vencer a Adriano de Souza en cuartos de final. Lo ha hecho de una forma contundente, brillante, y rápida. Solo ha necesitado ocho minutos para obtener un 18.87 y hacerle prácticamente imposible que el brasileño aguase la fiesta.

Porque la fiesta ya estaba aguada por la muerte de Andy Irons. Estoy seguro que el mejor surfista de todos los tiempos nunca soñó que iba a ganar su décimo título mundial en una situación como esta.

Con lágrimas corriendo por sus mejillas, la voz entrecortada y tocándose nervioso la cabeza, le dedicó su triunfo a Andy Irons. "Sólo quiero enviar mis condolencias a la familia de Andy", dijo. "Si no fuera por Andy yo no estaría aquí ahora mismo. Así que... eeehhh, no sé qué decir en este momento. . . Quiero dedicar esto a Andy y a su familia."

Seguro que ha sido el más amargo triunfo de Slater de toda su carrera deportiva.

Después, ha ganado el Rip Curl Pro Search 2010 sin despeinarse, eliminando a Taj Burrow en semifinales y luego a Bede Durbidge en la final con una puntuación de 18,77, con un 10 incluido.

¿Y qué pasa con ese número 11? Yo, personalmente, apuesto porque una retirada a tiempo es una victoria pero viendo lo que he visto en Puerto Rico, a Kelly le quedan todavía unos cuantos años.
